County Government

Countywide Office

  • County Clerk

    The County Clerk is responsible for maintaining public records, overseeing motor vehicle offices, and providing access to official documents. Clerks serve a four-year term.

    The UCDC endorses Taylor Bruck for County Clerk.

  • County Comptroller

    The Comptroller serves as the county’s chief financial officer, auditing operations and ensuring fiscal responsibility. Comptrollers serve a four-year term.

    The UCDC endorses March Gallagher for County Comptroller.

  • Family Court Judge

    Ulster County’s three Family Court Judges preside over court cases related to family law, including child custody and support, domestic violence, and adoptions. There is one vacancy this year, for a ten-year term.

    The UCDC endorses Lara Olivieri for Family Court Judge.

Ulster County is divided into 23 legislative districts. County Legislators create and vote on local laws and policies, overseeing the budget and operations of county government. A legislator looks out for the needs of their constituents, both in the present and toward the future.

State Government

NY State Supreme Court

  • Supreme Court Justice, Third Judicial District

    Ulster County if part of New York State’s Third Judicial District, which spans seven counties: Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Schoharie, Sullivan, and Ulster. This year there is one vacancy on the Supreme Court in the Third Judicial District.

Town / City / Village Government

  • Supervisor / Mayor

    In addition to acting as chair of the municipal council, the Supervisor/Mayor serves as the town’s budget officer, allocating the annual budget and mediating between interests.

  • Councilperson / Trustee

    Councilpersons/Trustees have law-making power and allocate the budget to run lovcal services like roadway maintenance, transfer stations, and community programs. Multiple seats are often up for election.

  • Highway Superintendent

    Responsible for the maintenance of municipal roadways, supervising workforce, managing budgets, and ensuring road safety, including snow removal and repairs.

  • Town Justice

    Local justices handle small claims, misdemeanors, violations, and certain felony cases. The role requires knowledge of the law and a commitment to fairness.

  • Town Clerk

    The Clerk issues permits, maintains records, transmits local laws, and handles vital records like birth and marriage certificates. In some areas, the Clerk also serves as Tax Collector.

  • Tax Collector

    The Tax Collector manages the collection of taxes that support schools, roads, public safety, and other community services.

  • Aldermen

    Aldermen represent city residents, create and vote on laws in the City of Kingston, and oversee the allocation of the city’s budget to ensure effective governance.
